In Waxhaw, we have six members on our Board of Commissioners, but only five of them vote regularly. Although he is a member of the board, our Mayor only votes if there is a need to break a tie. This scenario would only arise if one of the regular voting members was absent and there was a 2-2 split vote.
It’s not often that a tie vote needs to be broken. The last time this happened was back in 2020 when then-Mayor Ron Pappas broke a tie vote on what is now known as the Old Town Village development.
In our form of local government, the Mayor’s role is mostly ceremonial – presiding over meetings as the official head of our town. The Mayor Pro Tem acts as a regular Commissioner unless the Mayor is unavailable.
